Elai Vadam / Homemade rice papad | Vathal recipes (with a small video)

elai vadam

I usually watch all cooking programs in TV and my favourite is DD podhigai which shows program related to that season.Recently  they showed about vathal recipes which is usually made during this summer season.I too tried it ,its damn easy try it.

preparation time: under 15 mins(excludes soaking time)
cooking time: 30 mins
Drying time: 2 to 3 days

recipe source: TV show

Ingredients:

  • Raw rice-1 cup
  • Ginger-  a small 1 cm  length piece
  • green chilly-1
  • Omam/ajwan seeds-1\2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • banana leaf/plate- to make it

Method:

1.Soak rice for 2 hours and grind it to fine paste with little water along with ginger, chilly and ajwan seeds.(i used my mixer to grind). The batter should not be too thick nor too thin.add salt and mix well.

2.Clean the banana leaf ,smear some oil in it.Pour a ladle of of batter and spread thinly as u do for making dosai.Steam it in  idli pan/steamer.

3.In about 3-5 minuted it will be done.If u see the colour change then it is done.Remove from flame.peel it from the leaf( if will easily come).Cut in to pieces( see notes).Spread on clothes and dry it in sunlight for 2 or 3 days.(mine just took a day to dry as in Chennai it is soo hot).

4.After it has dried well keep it in air tight container, fry them in oil ,serve with rice or can be had as snack.

If u don't have banana leaf:

1.Take a flat plate.smear oil in it spread the batter and steam it.

(here i didn't take flat plate pls do it in flat onely, also be generous while applying oil so that it easily comes out.spread very thin.)

small video how to spread n peel:

Notes:

1.if u dried the vathal and break it ,it may break in to very small pieces.so cut in to pieces and dry.

2.If u prefer u can dry as the whole round. But when frying it will become very big and u need big pan with more oil to fry.
