Suzhiyam

suzhiyam

Suzhiyam/suzhiyan/seeyan/suyam in whatever name its called is one of a traditional recipe prepared during deepavali. This is a simple sweet filled with sweet fillings. In our area thats in kanyakumari the stuffing we usually prepare with whole green moongdal but in other blogs i see the stuffing is prepared with channa dal.For a evening snack i cooked whole green moongdal, some quantity was left so i decided to make suzhiyam.

Ingredients:

For filling:

  • Whole green moongdal- 1 cup
  • Grated jaggery- 3\4 cup
  • Grated coconut- 3 tbsp
  • Cardomon powder-1 tsp

For outer layer:

  • Maida- 3 tbsp
  • Salt-1\2 tsp
  • Water- as needed
  • Oil to fry

Method:

1.Cook the green moongdal with little salt,it should be soft but not mushy.I used pan to cook you can even use pressure cooker for it.Drain excess water if there& cool.

2.Grind ths dal with grated jaggery to a coarse mixture using the pulse mode of ur mixie/blender.

3.In a wide pan dry roast grated coconut, add the ground mix to it and saute till it thicken, you must to able to form balls.

4.Add cardomon powder to it,cool the mixture and make small balls of it.

5.In a mixing bowl add maida, salt ,water and make a thick paste.

6.Heat oil in a frying pan, take a ball dip it the prepared maida batter and drop it on the heated oil.turn over to cook on all side.

7.When cooked take it out and drain on paper towel.

Enjoy the sweet.

Note:

1.You can use idli/dosa batter of outer coating, but don't make your batter watery it should be thick else suzhiyam will absorb more oil.I made half with idli batter and half with maida.
