Batata Vada | Street Food of Maharastra

Batata Vada with step by step pictures.
Batata Vada is one of the most popular street food of Maharashtra. It is nothing but potato vada. 'Batata means potato. Cooked potato mixed up with spices and coated with besan flour mix which is then deep fried in oil. I adapted this recipe from MasterChef Sanjeev Kapoor's website. It is tasted best when served with tomato sauce and green chutney ( mint-coriander chutney).

Ingredients:


  • Potato-2 
  • Jeera-1/2 tsp
  • Coriander leaves-2 springs
  • Green chilli-1
  • Garlic pods-3
  • Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil-to deep fry


For outer coating:


  • Besan flour-1/2 cup
  • Rice flour-1 tbsp
  • red chilly powder-1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
  • cooking soda-1/8 tsp
  • Salt to taste


Instructions:

1. Cook potato, peel the skin and mash it up well.

2. Grind coriander, green chili, garlic and add it to the mashed potato.

3. Add turmeric powder, jeera, salt to it and mix it well.

4. Make balls out of it. Heat oil to fry.


5. Meanwhile, make semi thick paste with the ingredients given under " for outer coating".

6. Dip each potato balls in the outer coating and drop into hot oil and fry it well.

7. When fried on both sides drain from oil. Repeat the same for all balls.


Serve hot with sauce and green chutney.
