Red Rice Appam | Healthy South Indian Breakfast

Red Rice Appam | Healthy South Indian Breakfast

We all have seen and ate white appam/paal appam which is quite famous down in south Indian.I make the batter for appam every alternate week.Last time I bought a pack of red rice to experiment with it and make two breakfast recipes and one of it is this appam.I taste similar to white rice appam but with added health benefits.

If you are looking for the healthy option then do give a try.I followed my appam recipe except that I just added a tsp of urad dal.You can make this batter without coconut also yet the result would be the same.

Preparation time:2 hours
Fermentation time: 8 hours or overnight
Cooking time: 5 min per appam

Ingredients:

  • Red rice- 1 cup
  • Poha/aval/beaten rice-1\2 cup
  • Urad dal-1 tbsp
  • Coconut pieces-1\2 cup(optional)
  • Salt- to taste
  • Cooking soda-1\2 tsp
  • Sugar-1 Tsp

Method:

1.Clean rice, dal well and soak for 2-3 hours.

2.Soak poha just 1\2 an hour before grinding.

3.First grind poha, transfer to a container. Then grind drained rice with coconut( if using) to a fine paste with some water.Transfer it to the same container.

4.Add salt, soda and mix well.Keep it to ferment overnight.

5.Next morning just 1\2 an hour before making add a tsp of sugar and mix well.

6.Heat an appam pan, pour a ladle of batter and swirl around.Cover and cook in low flame till the edges become crisp.

7.When done remove from pan and do the same for all batter.

Serve with a veggie or non-veggie gravy.I served it with white stew.
